What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the system is unable to regulate blood sugar levels due to insufficient insulin production or insulin resistance. Known as Madhumeha in Ayurveda ,the condition is caused mainly by imbalances in the Kapha dosha. This leads to poor metabolism and insulin resistance.
If not treated on time, the results in high blood sugar levels and can lead to complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, damage to eyesight, dental issues, kidney problems and more.
There are several types of diabetes which are;
Type 1 Diabetes
This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It may occur in childhood or in early adulthood. This type requires insulin therapy to regulate blood sugar levels.
Type 2 Diabetes
This is the most common form and develops when the body either becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough. This type can often be managed through lifestyle changes, a healthy diet or medication.
Gestational Diabetes
This type occurs during pregnancy and can sometimes resolve after childbirth. However, women who have experienced this type are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Prediabetes
This is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered type 2. It is generally a warning sign indicating an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes if preventive measures are not followed.
